What is Gayuma?

Gayuma is a well-known tradition in the Philippines, but it is called by different names depending on the region. In Tagalog, it is known as gayuma. In some Visayan communities and parts of Mindoro, it is called lumay. Among the Maranaw, the terms kakasi or kata-o sa kabakagowi a tao are used. Although the names differ, they share the same main purpose: to attract someone, soften their feelings, or “bind” them so they remain committed to a relationship.

Many people think gayuma is only a potion given to a target, but it can take many forms. It may be an herbal preparation made from different plant parts, a special oil applied to the hair or body, or a charm carried to make someone appear more pleasant and attractive to others.

Some charms may also be hidden in a place where the person you want to attract lives or often stays. Gayuma may also involve a ritual accompanied by a specific prayer or orasyon.

Gayuma has long been part of Filipino culture. Based on historical records from Manila between 1611 and 1639, love magic was the most commonly recorded form of folk magic during that period. This shows that gayuma has long been part of Philippine history and traditional beliefs.
